New Jersey has always been a noteworthy place to reside, especially for the younger crowds, but what about retirees? The state offers many of the same coastal scenery and culture as nearby Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island yet is not nearly as expensive as those other New England areas for seniors.

New Jersey senior housing averages around $2,000 per month, far below Massachusetts ($4,000 per month) and New York ($3,800 per month), yet has many of the same commodities and essentials that older adults need.

Features of New Jersey Senior Housing Facilities

While New Jersey is the fourth smallest state in the U.S., it is the 11th most populated (9 million residents as of last year) and the most densely populated in America. Considered part of the greater New York City, Boston and Philadelphia statistical area, this region is not for those older adults that despise big crowds, crowded freeways and lack of personal space.

However, for senior citizens that appreciate a coastal environment with quick access to NYC and being connected with an art, cultural, historical and intellectual dynamic, New Jersey is an ideal setting that is also close to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Rates of New Jersey Senior Housing Complexes

Though New Jersey combines to represent the third-wealthiest state based on median household income, its cost of living, at least for seniors, is not all that outrageous. Affordable New Jersey senior housing is a little difficult to find, as most apartments and condos begin at $2,000 per month, yet compared to the rest of the northern east coast the rental prices are at least reasonable.

The average monthly cost for senior housing in New Jersey is $3,300 per month, yet can extend to $5,300 for waterfront properties or New Jersey senior living facilities in high-end neighborhoods.

Amenities of Senior Apartments for Rent in New Jersey

Since the area is so densely populated, most senior living facilities in New Jersey are large apartment or condo complexes exclusive to retirees. Some of these facilities draw more of a younger crowd, those aged 55+ New Jersey older adults. Meanwhile, other complexes are geared more toward elderly housing and may be exclusively reserved for 62+ adults and senior citizens.

Regardless of your need, senior living in New Jersey is very good with a high quality of life. Not only are the rooms comfortable and stylish, but many feature extra amenities like a pool or spa, fitness center, activity room, laundry services, private parking, 24/7 security, secured access into buildings and regularly scheduled community events.

Most New Jersey senior apartments for rent are pet-friendly for an extra monthly fee. Check with management to be sure of their policy and if there are any restrictions on breeds or number of pets allowed in a single unit.

Popular Senior Living Communities in New Jersey

Where are some of the best places to live in New Jersey for seniors? Good question. Among personal favorites and those commonly selected in surveys, North Arlington, Ridgewood, White Meadow Lake, Princeton, Oradell, Edison Township, Saddle Brook and Succasunna rate among the highest.

Newark, which is the largest city in the state, provides quick access to NYC and more affordable senior housing in New Jersey, yet the units there are not nearly as luxurious and the crime rate is higher.

New Brunswick and Trenton are two other affordable senior housing options for seniors in New Jersey on a fixed income.
